The reason why there are many different kinds of engineers and specialists is because there exist plenty of different industries and processes. In the same way that companies need specialists who fit in their field, specialists need to choose the most suitable components according to their specifications, design, performance, etc.

Touchscreen monitors are one of these components that can be customized for different applications and this article will focus on certain properties of the display.

Brightness
Brightness

The two main concepts that come to our mind when talking about a display are the size and the resolution. However, as practice shows, brightness is an even more important parameter and in many cases is considered first.

Brightness or luminance is the scientific term which specifies the visual brightness of an object. Luminance is specified in candelas per square meter (cd/m²) or nits.

Brightness is paramount for perceived picture quality. The importance of brightness is enhanced by the fact that the human mind will react more positively to brightly illuminated scenes and objects. Users are typically more drawn to brighter displays that are more pleasing to the eye and easier to read. Even in indoor environments, where a standard TFT LCD display with brightness around 250 cd/m² looks good, a sunlight readable High Bright monitor with brightness of 1000 cd/m² will look even more attractive. Keetouch High Bright monitors have brightness range between 1000 to 2500 cd/m², which enables you to choose the right monitor for your needs.

Size
Size

Usually, in the industry the best option is not the biggest displays since there is a reduced space between machines, safety fences, robots, etc. In addition, it is necessary to access into the machines for maintenance and an oversized screen could make it inconvenient to replace parts and to move machinery.

On the other hand, a bigger screen would allow the technicians and operators to monitor the process parameters from a further distance and to tap on the different settings easily without any mistake. If the screen is used for controlling production and showing daily and hourly data and it is placed far from the production lines, then a much bigger display could be perfectly used.

Resolution
Resolution

Regarding the resolution, we might not be interested in purchasing a high-resolution touch monitor if the purpose of it is to be installed on an electric cabinet. The power and current values are only checked from time to time and the parameters of the process are modified only after finishing an order.

However, if the touch screen is placed in a control or supervising room where it’s used for displaying SCADA, real time data and needs people to work on it for a certain daily amount of time, then a higher resolution would make more sense to create a more comfortable working condition.

Keetouch GmbH industrial monitors and screens are avaliable with various resolutions starting from 800×600 to 3840×2160 depending on the size and purpose of the display. The most popular resolutions are 1024×768, 1280×1024 and full HD 1920x1080.

Coating
Coating

Another important visual property is the glass coating or finish and it needs to be chosen considering the working environment and the application for which the touch monitor is meant for. Different coatings will cause a totally different effect on the surface of the screen and that’s why we must differentiate between glossy and matte.

The main difference between these two concepts is the amount of light that the surface reflects and this directly causes an effect on the user. On one hand, the glossy displays provide a sharper image and a better contrast but reflections from the ambient light can be seen. On the other hand, matte screens diffuse the ambient light, even strong direct light, but the image is slightly hazy. This is a key point that must be considered since touch monitors placed outdoors will be exposed to strong direct light for many hours a day, while screens used for indoors commercial purposes will not suffer this effect that much.

The fact of cleaning the surface of the display is also an important point to consider. Although matte finish makes dust, grease and others less visible, it is harder to clean it. In certain industries this would not mean any disadvantage but in pharmaceutical and food industries for example, where the working environment must be perfectly clean and without any contaminants, it makes sense using glossy surfaces to easily spot any dirt that needs to be clean. If the feeling of a glossy display is not the desired, it is always possible to install a protective matte film.

Touch technologies
Touch technologies

A part from the visual and image properties, the touch technology is perhaps the most important parameter to consider for a customized touch monitor. Not choosing the right specification of the previously mentioned properties might make its operation inconvenient, uncomfortable, etc. However, choosing the wrong touch technology for your industrial application might make it not work at all. To avoid this issue, it is important to understand what kinds of touch technology are there and when to choose each.
